Capstone Internship

Case Manager Intern
Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a nonprofit organization that supports the community through education, partnership, and advocacy. I first joined BACI in the summer of 2025 as a mentor intern, where I work directly with students and support their academic and personal development.
For my Spring 2026 capstone, I return to BACI as a Case Manager Intern for the Program Initial Resettlement.
Primary Responsibilities and Projects
Detail the projects and responsibilities you took on at your internship.:
●Collected and verified client information needed for benefits, housing, employment, and immigration‑related documentation
● Participated in meetings with supervisors and partner agencies to track client progress, identify barriers, and plan next steps
● Organized and maintained client documents, including IDs, medical records, benefit letters, and case forms, ensuring files were complete and up‑to‑date
●Counted and recorded inventory of basic need items

Learning Objectives and Outcomes
During my internship with BACI, I learned how to support newly arrived refugees through the initial resettlement process. I gained hands-on experience working with clients from diverse backgrounds, organizing case files, and working with my supervisor.
I was expected to collect and verify client information, participate in meetings with supervisors and partner agencies, and learn about other programs so I could guide clients to the appropriate resources. I met these expectations by being detail-oriented when reviewing documents, ensuring accuracy in every case file, and asking questions whenever I needed clarification. By staying engaged, organized, and willing to learn, I was able to support the resettlement team effectively and contribute to a smooth process for the clients we served

The Program Initial Resettlement (PIR) partner up with United Way volunteer

PIR collaborated with a United Way volunteer to prepare for the arrival of a newly resettled client from another country. As part of this process, we demonstrated how to properly set up a home before a client arrives, explaining each step so the volunteer could understand the resettlement program's expectations and standards.
We gathered essential household items—including hygiene products, shower supplies, cleaning materials, bedding, and other basic‑needs items—and ensured everything on the checklist was included. After collecting the supplies, we loaded them into the car, transported them to the client’s new residence, and set up the living space. This included arranging the bed, organizing supplies, and making sure the home was clean, safe, and welcoming. The goal was to create a comfortable environment that would help the client feel supported as they began their new life in the United States
